Visioning Sessions I: Infrastructure and Inner Transition

Over the coming months, the people of Galway are being invited to a series of short meetings to share their ideas to create a positive vision for the future of the city.

Visioning Session 1 Poster IBACKGROUND
With the help of local people, Transition Galway aim to produce a plan and vision for a low carbon, sustainable Galway by the year 2030. Everyone in Galway can contribute to and input their ideas during a series of short free visioning events that take place on four Saturdays between March and May. We decided to have the sessions on Saturdays to allow as many attend as possible. All sessions will take place at Galway Rowing Club, Woodquay.

The series starts on Saturday 1st March with the two topics: ‘Infrastructure’ (11am – 1pm) and ‘Inner Transition’ (2pm – 4pm). ‘Infrastructure’ will cover such issues as planning, transport and buildings. ‘Inner Transition’ will involve exploring the inner dimension, bringing insights and practices from psychological, spiritual and other relevant traditions. Refreshments will be provided at each session and everyone is welcome to attend any session.

Following on from the full day visioning event which we organised in April 2013 (see video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VoGkqiT2LI), there will be a second series of short workshops similar to the original Visioning Day but this time focusing on particular topics such as the arts, food etc.

These half-day sessions will allow those taking part to go deeper into particular topics to flesh out areas that weren’t covered in sufficient detail on the main Visioning Day last year. The organisers are also looking for ideas from people on how we get to a sustainable Galway by 2030 – the steps needed to be taken between where the city is now and where they want it to be in 2030. Along with members of the public, people with local expertise in relevant fields will be invited to attend and contribute at these workshops – this will allow an informed discussion on the various topics.

Each two hour session will be broken into two parts with a break in between. Every workshop will start with a brainstorming session to allow people come up with more ideas and a fuller vision for how they want Galway to be in the future. The second part will be about imagining the steps needed to be taken to get from where we are now, to where we want to be. For example, in energy, it might be decided that Galway source all of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. In the first part, it might be decided to come up with particular targets for renewables for certain years such as 50% renewables by 2023 and 100% by 2030. In the second part, it will be necessary to try and come up with concrete ideas about how this will be achieved.

GALWAY VISIONING DOCUMENT
The main objective is to produce a vision document for Galway in the year 2030. All good ideas generated during the eight short sessions will be brought together into a single final vision document which will be freely available online and copies will be distributed to local schools, libraries etc. This document will be a comprehensive plan for the genuinely sustainable development of Galway city designed for and by the local community. The document will outline a vision of a more resilient Galway by 2030 as well as the practical steps to reach it. There will be year-by-year targets from the present to 2030 to measure progress. Similar documents have been produced by other communities around the world including Kinsale, Co. Cork and Totnes in England (http://totnesedap.org.uk/).
