Resilient Local Economies + Communities – Green Drinks February 2013

Davie Philip, of Cultivate and Cloughjordan Ecovillage, is the guest speaker at the February 2013 Green Drinks Galway event which takes place at 8pm Thursday 7th February in the Oslo Bar in Salthill. Davie will explore community resilience, in particular how we strengthen our communities to be more healthy and sustainable backed by local economies that are stronger and more resilient. All are welcome.

As well as being involved in the Cloughjordan Ecovillage project, Davie Philip is Community Resilience Manager at Cultivate Living and Learning. Established in 2000 with offices in Dublin and Cloughjordan, Cultivate has played a key role in furthering the profile of sustainability in Ireland over the past decade through the research, development, sourcing and publishing of both online and printed informational resources, education programmes and networking events. Programmes and courses run by Cultivate include green building, community resilience and permaculture. In 2010-2011, Cultivate collaborated with other organisations to run the Green Works programme which brought together industry experts, entrepreneurs and educators from across the country to provide Green Economy training to more than 1,800 jobseekers. Along with Entreprise Ireland, Cultivate is one of the organising partners of Better Building International Conference for a Sustainable Built Environment ( which takes place in Croke Park this April. Cultivate also runs The Convergence Festival.


The Cloughjordan Ecovillage brings together a diverse group of people creating an innovative new community in Tipperary. They are doing this a way that is democratic, healthy and socially enriching while minimising ecological impacts.

Their 67-acre site includes beautiful and fertile land where they grow their own food, and plants and trees to promote biodiversity. The ecovillage includes:
» More than 50 low energy homes and work units so far
» A solar- and wood-powered community heating system
» 50 acres of land for allotments, farming and woodland
» A green enterprise centre and hi-spec broadband
» An eco-hostel for visitors
» A nearby train station and community farm
